In a French art journal, the Portraits series was linked with the art of Socialist Realism or even that of Fascism. In response to this charge, Thomas Ruff used digital technology to replace the irises of the eyes in twelve of his portraits with the bright blue eyes of another model, the color of which was intensified in the print.
